Elements Organizer and Bridge: Freeze in Adobe Photo Downloader when you click Choose

After installing the Camera Raw 6.5 update, when using Elements 9 Organizer or Bridge CS5/5.5 to import images from your camera or card reader, the Adobe Photo Downloader will become unresponsive if you click the Choose button to change the Save Location. This issue does not affect Elements 10 Organizer.

Is that a permanent solution? Or will there be a patch to fix this?

I checked the directory and I don't have any file with that name

Adobe Camera Raw 6.5 seems to have the following bug: When using the function "Get photos from camera" in Bridge, Bridge locks up hard when trying to crete a new folder to put the incoming pictures in. Only a forced quit on my Mac will quit the program so I can start over. Replacing ACR 6.5 with 6.4 works as advertised - no lockups. My system is a Mac Pro with MAC OS X 10.7.1 and CS5 4.5.0.11.

Don't send out an official email or anything giving the heads up, just hope nobody notices while they try to fix the problem. Really? There is this thing before you do a rollout called testing, you know were you install the patch or update then TEST FOR BUGS! You would think that Adobe would be above doing in flight fixes at this stage in the game.

We don't like to send unsolicited emails to our customers. Plus, we do not have the email address of every customer who has purchased Photoshop Elements or a product that includes Bridge, so this would be an ineffectual method of spreading the news.

We do have testing for bugs, both internally and externally. This Camera Raw 6.5 update was available for a quite a long time as a public beta (at labs.adobe.com). No one caught it, not even non-Adobe testers like you. There are just some behaviors that will not be seen until after a release, and that is true of all software.

But we are aware of this issue, we know what is causing it, and we have a patch on the way. It will take a little bit before the patch is released because there will be further bug testing. This doesn't mean we can guaranty there will be no future bugs, no software manufacture can promise such a thing, but we being a thorough as time allows.

Photo uploader opens as normal but when you select a location to upload image files it freezes and becomes unresponsive. Only solution to force quit and move files via Bridge folders window. Seems to be a result of recent ACR 6.5 update.

As a pro freelance photographer this really grinds.

I'm frustrated that no one from adobe seems to be addressing this problem - how about a public shout out of sorry, but we're working on it.....

It worked for me and is a good workaround until the new year, when I'll want to make another annual folder. By then I hope you'll have fixed the original problem.

Note that Lion users need to hold down the Option key before they select Go from the Finder to reveal their hidden User Library.

This still is not a solution. The folder "Bridge CS5.1" already exists but the APDPreferences.xml file never gets created (even after downloading a photo). I have posted this 3 times now and everyone seems to ignore. I did see another user (KurtA) that says the same thing.

Going back to your earlier reply, you mention that you only have two items in the Bridge CS5.1 folder: Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml and Adobe Bridge Metadata Preferences.abdata. There should be a whole lot more in this folder. But perhaps you mean these are the only two files and you are not mentioning the sub-folders.

If you make any settings changes in the Photo Downloader, are they saved (still present the next time you open it)? If so, this file exists on your system, otherwise your would see the default settings every time you opened it. This includes whether the Advanced Dialog is showing or not.

Do you also have CS5 installed and is there a "Bridge CS5" folder? If so, is there an APDPreferences.xml file there? It may be saving your settings there, sharing them with CS5.

Yes, you are right. There is a lot more. Here is the entire CS5.1 folder (all but the 2 I mentioned earlier are subfolders):
Bridge CS5.1
Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml
Adobe Bridge Metadata Preferences.abdata
Adobe Output Module
Batch Rename Settings
Collections
Export Panel
Export Presets
Favorite Alias
LabelsAndRatings
Workspaces

In terms of savings. It has saved my metadata, not sure if there is anything else. I did look through all the other subfolders and have done a search of the entire hard drive and have not been able to find the APDPreferences.xml file.

I do have CS5 installed but the only folders under CS5 are preset folders and none contain this file.

Robert, I am looking in the users/library

As to Saving, I mean the settings within the Photo Downloader window itself. For example, if you clicked the Advanced Dialog button, is the Advanced Dialog displayed the next you open it? Or if you put a check mark into one of the options, such as "Convert To DNG", is the check mark still there the next time you open the Photo Downloader. If the answer is "Yes", this file exists somewhere on your computer. If the answer is "No", then something on your computer is preventing the creation of this file.

THOUGHT. I've been doing some googling on mackeeper and found that in some instances the binary cutter can affect the performance of Photoshop CS5. When the upgrade first came out, bridge would not work, so I did a complete clean-up with mackeeper (including binary cutter). This solved the problem with bridge, but obviously now the downloader doesn't work appropriately. Could this be the issue with the xml file not being created? Everything else in bridge appears to be working fine.

Try creating the Bridge CS5 folder manually and see if the .xml file gets created in it. See this doc for more info:

Okay ... now I have the folder ... thanks so much. I still have the freeze issue, but I'll wait for that solution. At least I can change the folder. Thanks (I guess I should have tried this in the beginning, but was assuming CS5 and CS5.1 were the same folder.

I have temporarily solved the problem by just opening the card from the card reader file by double clicking on it and then dragging the picture file into the desired directory in Bridge. Actually it's easier than using Downloader.

Since I updated the ACR 6.5 I have a problem with the photo downloader, it doesn't let me choose where I want to download my pictures and it freezes.

I read in other blogs that I have to uninstall ACR 6.5 and replace it with 6.4 but I don't know where to find the ACR 6.5 so I can remove it. I tried HardDrive>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Plug-Ins>CS5>File Formats but there is only one file called Camera Row plugins and I don't want to delete something else.

Thank you

Since I downloaded the ACR 6.5 upgrade, along with the PhotoDownloader freezing up, I've also noticed that any and all linked movie clips embedded on my Facebook page will run, but WITHOUT any audio. No audio adjustments operate whatsoever..I can play CD's on my MacBookPro with no problem with the audio controls working. Hope this gives you another clue to resolving the ACR 6.5 bug.

Hmm. Loss of audio in a webpage sounds coincidental/unrelated but we are aware of the downloader issue.

Jeffrey,
I believe my observation was more of a coincidence, also...my bad. Prolly more of a FB issue. Anxious for the Photo Downloader/ACR 6.5 fix...continued good luck in your repair efforts.
