When did the switch to Process Version 4 occur?

Process Version 3 (2012) has been the current version of the rendering engine since LR 4, but I just noticed LR Classic CC now has an option to use Process Version 4 (Current).

Did this change just occur with the latest release, or have I been overlooking that menu for awhile?

If this is a new process version, what are the differences? I haven't seen any information on the new process.

The change from 2010 to 2012 was dramatic. But when I switch my images from Version 3 to Version 4, there's no visible difference.

PV4 was introduced in LR Classic 7.0 to accommodate changes in auto masking.  See this article: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/whats-new-lightroom-classic-october-2017-70/

Thanks. It looks like there's no need to convert all the images to the new process. They can be converted as needed when editing.

The new range masking tools work great.

Yes, they get converted only when needed.

Existing images that do not have auto mask enabled local adjustments will be automatically upgraded to PV4 on any new edit.
Newly imported images will be set to PV4 automatically.
Existing images with auto mask enabled local adjustments will be automatically upgraded to PV4 only when a new edit involves Range Mask or Auto Mask.

Thanks,

"Newly imported images will be set to PV4 automatically."

That's not the case for my images. Have imported recent pics from Sony A7RIII and not all of them are on PV4 by default.

Are you applying a preset on import? Or custom defaults?

Ok if I've understood this correctly, Lightroom Classic by default uses the new process version 4 on new images. This is to accommodate the new range mask feature. The presets i made in Lightroom 6 were by default ticked to use process version3 (2012). So in Lightroom Classic if i have images that I've used the new range mask on and then use a preset that i made in Lightroom 6 which had process version ticked, those presets would force the image in Lightroom Classic back to process version 3 which would muck up the range mask on that image. So really my presets i made in Lightroom 6 are all useless now then?
