Nikon D810 Posterization with some Camera Profiles

Posterization is occurring when some of the new Nikon D810 camera profiles are applied to images with gradients. This camera is newly supported in LR 5.6 and ACR 8.6 released a few days ago. I don't know as this was reported during the ACR 8.6 RC period.

There is a long discussion about this on DPReview:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/5...

Here is the initial example on the DPReview thread, where the transition between the blue phone-lit area and the pink skin shows abrupt transitions:

After some discussion of what fruit is in the photo, another person supplies an original raw that shows posterization in the water area:

It looks like there is some 3 or 4-bit math happening in the profiles, perhaps in the contrast curve, instead of 8- or 16-bit.

Here is one more example from the DPReview thread:

I can confirm the bug and it is seen in many other D810 NEF images as well.

Somehow the color noise reduction setting will also have some impact on how these artifacts will look like. I think there might be something weird going on with color noise reduction for D810 high ISO images too.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Nikon D810 camera profile issue.

Using the new camera profiles for Nikon D810 I experience the following error:
Camera profiles Standard, Vivid, Monochrome and Landscape produce rough color bandings resp. color artifacts. But profiles Neutral, Flat, Portrait and Adobe Standard work fine.
If you need some DNG example images, feel free to contact me.

Camera Standard (enlarge to see color bands, e.g. in the background leafes)

Camera Neutral (for comparison - as it should look like)

D810 camera profile not working correctly in LR 5.6.

Lightroom 5.6 and Nikon D810 camera profiles not working correctly. Changing to certain camera profiles such as camera standard, camera vivid, camera monochrome etc leads to bad artifacts noticed mostly in out of focus areas. Adobe support has acknowledged they see the same thing on raw files. Yet they were of no help in solving the issue. You can see the issue in this comparison of adobe standard vs camera vivid profile.
