Lightroom 2015.7+: Panels and filmstrip black when switching to Develop

Not sure if this is the right place for a bug report, if not could anyone direct me to the right place please.

Clicking develop module at top right from the Library module opens the photo with film strip and both side bars black empty spaces. Initial few times I had to quit and restart Lightroom but then discovered switching to grid view again and develop keyboard short cut, everything comes back.

All LR control panels disappear w/o warning.  I have a screenshot but no means to upload.

It seems to happen when Lightroom has been left open for a while.  The panels all around the main image will just disappear and go black.  They are open you just can't see them.  It seems like some kind of graphics driver bug, if I restart Lightroom everything will be fine, it's just annoying.   I've only noticed it after upgrading to MacOS Sierra 10.12.2.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lightroom controls go black when entering develop module..

Occasionally when I enter the develop module from the library, all the controls go black.  They literally disappear.  I then have to exit the program and reopen.  I have a 2015 MacBook pro and keep all software up to date automatically.  This is becoming very annoying and is costing me time when trying to edit images.  Has anyone experienced this and is there a solution?

Still waiting - no mention of a fix - and no indication of a timeline. Affected on both of my machines. Is anyone listening at Adobe?

I was told to turn off "Use Graphics Processor" in Preferences, Performance.  Since my panels disappear at unpredictable times I haven't had a chance as yet to verify if this will fix the immediate problem.  I'll observe and repost re outcome.

Thanks for the suggestion! Graphics processor is turned off on both of my machines, and won't turn back on - it seems Adobe have dropped support for a number of mac graphics processors that are older than ~4 years. So I don't think the problem is solely down to GPU usage.

Any news Adobe? Anything to say or add?

I am not favorably impressed with Adobe's response, or lack thereof, either.

I've wasted time asking Adobe customer service and their twitter support for a projected timeline, which would help me understand whether it's worth downgrading or not. No answer yet! But I was told to try resetting my preferences, then turn off GPU, which seems to be the stock initial response even on known issues awaiting fixes from the development team! I do question the level of customer support. Sorry to be 'that guy' who points out that CC customers were promised better customer service and faster availability of fixes under the subscription model.....

This is insane. I'm finding other little glitches in my Lightroom CC on my iMac 27". I can't believe Adobe hasn't addressed these issues by now. WHAT IS GOING ON?

I'm getting very frustrated with Lightroom problems - poor performance, disappearing panels and now for the last 3 days problems importing and viewing video files. I can view/play a video file 2 or 3 times and then LR stops displaying or playing video files. The only way I can get recover from this problem is close LR and restart my iMac. All my software, macOS & it's components, LR CC 2015.8, Adobe Premiere Elements etc are uptodate & at current levels. When I pay a monthly subscription fee I expect better results than I'm seeing from Adobe lately.

I have been having all the same problems described by many LR CC users here.  They seem to be fixed with the most recent OS update to 10.12.3.  I keep waiting for the panels to black out when I switch modes, but so far today it has not happened :)!

Great news. Please let us know if the panels start to go out again. I am going to wait a bit before I update again.

Same as Jeffrey here, it's still happening in OSX 12.3 on my Mac. The Mac update did not sort the problem, which (going by adobe's limited communication on the issue) requires an update to the application for which a timeline cannot be shared.

I spoke too soon, dang!  I am still encountering the problem.  Sorry for the false info last night.  I am right back to being as frustrated as the rest of you.  Tried the simple suggestion, toggling between modes by hitting E, nothing.  When i minimize the window and bring it back, the panels are back too but they black out again as soon as I click on an image.  The only remedy is closing LR and restarting.  At this point, I am not planning to try going backward in versions.  Fortunately my edit load at this time is not huge, hoping the fix comes soon, come on Adobe!

Its my 3rd comment under this post. 56 Days and counting.... Adobe wake up! Speak to us! For us professionals it is just beyond ridiculous on that stage. I have over 600000 pictures in the library at the moment, there is no way I am going to spent time and take any risk in rolling back. This is not why I pay the monthly subscription. Time is money here! I am using LR for in studio sales and viewings. How embarrassing is when I show the pictures to clients and have to restart the LR 3 times just before closing sale worth €1000. What my clients think? Unprofessional? Unreliable?  Probably!

Do you realise that people use your software for work and not only to edit snapshots from their holidays?

Please do something, say something!

There has to be more to this issue than meets the eye. Adobe have always addressed problems in reasonably timely fashion, but this issue has been met with stoney silence and inaction. WHY?
Is it because they believe it's an Mac OS Sierra issue? There has to be something going on in the background. In the meantime we subscribers are left hanging. Bad news Adobe.

I'm not into second guessing what's going on inside Adobe (or Apple). At the moment I'm paying money out monthly, and not getting the performance I want because recent updates are broken. There's no meaningful information as to the problem, and no timeline for the fix. Vague comments from Adobe like 'it should be soon' are not helpful, and suggestions to spend time rolling back versions or trashing preferences (!) are no real solution.
It's not an acceptable situation to me as a customer, and it's far from the level of support promised when CC was introduced. Once again Adobe - when is the fix expected?

I have found a solution that has been working for me for the past few days. Nothing else mentioned above had helped. Try it and see if it works for you:

When the panels go black, Right-click on the Lightroom icon in your Dock and select Hide. After Lightroom is hidden, Right-click on its icon in the dock again and select Show. The panels should be back.

This has been working for me for the past several days. Sometimes more than once during a long editing session.

This Hiding and Showing as been working for me as long as I leave Lightroom open and Showing. If I Hide Lightroom and select the icon to reopen the panels go black. Very frustrating to see that Adobe has not fixed this bug.

It worked for me as well. And I agree: very frustrating that Adobe hasn't addressed this. It is a MAJOR hassle.

yes, Thanks Russell for posting this temporary solution!  It worked! for me on first attempt.  Haven't had to restart LR, it's been 1/2 hour since I did the work around trick and I'm still editing, bouncing between modules even.  Very grateful for this!

This works, but it's irritating to do this while trying to cull and perform quick edits. Am I going to have to jump ship to ON1?????

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lightroom: All control panels are black/disappeared after import.

I just finished exporting a library and clicked on the import button to import a bunch of images. That resulted in all controls disappearing - I can toggle between show and hide on all four directions, but just don't see any controls

Click the yellow button on the title bar to hide the whole window and then click in the dock to bring back. My experience is that it will refresh and be good for a few minutes but only by quiting and restarting the software will I get a longer lasting relief.

also try the remedy Russell Cardwell mentions in post above, it's working for me

The Lightroom team is actively investigating and working on fixing this intermittent issue of UI panels becoming Black, and we are close to finding a solution for it, however, it is not yet in the most current update (6.9/CC2015.9). We are hoping to have it fixed in next update.

For workaround information please see this document: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-panels-black-issue.html

Thank you for your patience.

Thanks for the official response. We have been waiting for months for that. It seemed like adobe either didn't notice or didn't care about this issue which affects a lot of people.

@Rikk Flohr, how do I "watch a thread"? Are you asking that visit this link every day until the issue is resolved? Won't I know there is a fix when the CC app notifies me?
