Lightroom: Ability to use the "Auto-Align Layers" algorithm from Photoshop, but on image sequences

The Auto-Align Layers feature in Photoshop is awesome for aligning images to each other. This feature would be extremely useful in Lightroom to ensure pictures taken with a static are all aligned to each other when shown in a sequence. It would also make cropping multiple images at the same time easier and provide a variety of other benefits that would speed up a lot of workflows significantly. While I assume it wouldn't be trivial to port this feature to Lightroom, the code for this already exists in Photoshop, as such, the effort required to so is probably less than coming up with this from scratch.

That was supposed to read "without a tripod", of course.

Yes, please, please, please make layers part of Lightroom's functionality. Old school photoshop layers are a pain in the you know what.

Agreed. Trying to align a set of images in LR should not be as difficult as it is. Even the ability to set a reference overlay would be a start!

You can already set a reference overlay, at least:

Say you needed to crop a series of standardised portraits, such that the rough size of the head and the level of the eyes within the photos, needed to all match up.

(With the help of Photoshop or similar) make a PNG image which has some suitable guidelines within it, otherwise transparent.

Then in Lightroom, choose that PNG as your ( View menu ) "Loupe Overlay". This autoscales to fill the current crop, as you work. Helps visually achieve a constant alignment across multiple photos.
