Lightroom: Add attribute filter "Not equal to"

When editing large groups of photos in Lightroom, I use star ratings to determine my selections. Often, I need to see which photos are not starred yet and then go back to the ones with stars. I would like to see an additional condition for the star filtering for "Not equal to". It would save me from having to do multiple clicks of "Equals" then "no star", then back to "Greater than or equals", then "one star". Doing this over and over is simply tedious and a waste of time. Please consider this request.

You could define two filter presets, "Not Starred" and "Starred", and it would then be easier to switch back and forth.

Great point. Though must say that I have been using Lightroom since v1 Beta and it never even occurred to me to use the filter presets, which to me, aren't as obvious as simply adding "Rating is not equal to" under the selection for >, <, =.

Agreed. The search features of LR are pretty creaky and haven't gotten much love.

I like to give the ones I haven't processed yet 0 stars (default). As I process I delete ones I don't want, but ones I don't like so much but want to keep I give 1 star.

A not equal to 1 star would get those out of my way. Then I could see all unstared and those with more than 1 star at the same time. I want this feature!

Not stared would be OK, but we really already have that by selecting <= 0 stars.

You could define a smart collection "Rating Not 1":

That's a good idea. I haven't tried smart collections yet. It would still be nicer to have the not equal that can be turned on and off quickly in any folder, but at some point I will look into the smart collections.

Good idea. In addition to "permanent" smart collections, I have a "temporary" scratch smart collection too, just for quick editing - like an on-the-fly library filter, but with a little more kick...

PS - Once upon a time, Lightroom treated multiple selected folders/collections with an implied "intersection" (meaning a smart collection could limit the photos displayed in another collection, like a filter). Unfortunately, multiple folders/collections are now handled with an implied "union", meaning photos for all the various selections can only add to the filmstrip, not take away. I much prefer it the way it was. The way it used to be, one could simply define a smart collection as John Ellis illustrated above, then control-click it to filter current photo source(s).

Cheers,
Rob

See this thread for a discussion about the change in behavior of intersecting smart collections and folders:
