Lightroom Classic: A way to Auto-run "Library>Find Missing Photos" command

I recently discovered several thousand photos in my LR4 library were missing... indicated by the "?" on the thumbnail. As I rarely looked at these old folders, it was several months until I noticed. It would be good if the Library>Find Missing Photos command could be set to autorun, and indicate when new missing photos were discovered.

Yep, gets my full support. Particularly if it's individual photos, rather than whole folders that have gone missing, it can easily be a long time before it's discovered.

+1 vote: I think at startup and/or shutdown, say along with catalog integrity check (and hopefully: photo integrity check for all file types) would be good.

I'd like this functionality builtin too.

A plugin could accomplish the checks for missing files at startup via photo:checkPhotoAvailability(). It could even do a large amount of an integrity check by using Exiftool to verify that the file format is readable (which would take a fair amount of time).

it would be nice to add an 'offline' tag into a smart folder set up. That would then alert you of files offline. Or, as with FCP, when relinking images, relink an entire volume or folder at one time.

"it would be nice to add an 'offline' tag into a smart folder set up. "

Would there be much practical difference between having a smart collection "Missing Photos" and using the Library > Find Missing Photos command? In either case, you'd have to remember to look at the collection or run the command.

"when relinking images, relink an entire volume or folder at one time."

In LR, you can relink an entire volume or folder --right click the folder and do Update Folder Location.

I think during the periodic Catalog Optimization during backup might be a great time to run this and report when you open Lightroom the next time.

Is this function implemented as an autorun option yet?

(Currently looking for option or plugin to auto-delete images in catalogue that are not available physically on disc.)

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion!
Its a a good third alternative for the manual processing of orphans.

The other two manual options are:

1) right click a folder and select "Synchronize"

or

2) select library from the menu, then select find all missing photos, then select all, then delete

Unfortunately i'm looking for an automated option here, which i was wondering if it is implemented as an autorun option as of yet.

However, there is very little talk about autorun for this kind of basic function, which im actually very suprised of - since lightroom as of today seems more mature and would be sort of expected to carry this option. :)

Best regards,

Tobias

Since catalog is locked and SDK does not support removal of photographs, you won't find a plugin that will do more than Metadata Extensions in this regard. It's tricky business ya know, as currently designed/implemented - somebody powers up Lightroom with the external drive disconnected and finds an empty catalog! So auto-delete would have to be accompanied by auto-import, but as things stand, when a photo is removed from the catalog, so is all the data about them, so it would take a fair amount of effort and "redesign" to really have it how you want it. My guess: ain't gonna happen anytime soon, so... (best to adapt).

Hi Rob,

Thanks for pointing out the plugin development limitations with Adobe Lightroom SDK.

@Adobe - may you respond by adding folder synchronization _automation_ in the main Adobe Lightroom product as an option? If not, may you open up the SDK to carry opportunity for the plugin developers to add this functionality? (as explained by Rob is currently not available in SDK.)

Looking forward to the new Creative Cloud release of Adobe Lightroom shortly!

Many thanks!

Best regards,

Tobias

If I had a Missing File status available for smart collections it would allow me to do a much quicker search for files that are missing when I go to move files from one folder to another using LR Classic.  I'd also like a Missing File option available to use for filters.  The "Find All Missing Photos" seems not to be doing anything once selected from the Library menu despite my attempt to move a collection of photos to another folder reporting some of them missing.  None of the thumbnails for the photos in the collection I was trying to move show a missing file icon so I don't know which of those it says were the ones missing.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled I would like a Missing File option available to use for smart collections or filters.
