Lightroom Classic: Similarly named TIF file hangs "Synchronize Folder"

With the first file below already imported into Lightroom, I attempted to Synchronize Folder (with Import Dialog "on") after an external tool created the second file below:

DSC_1122-Edit.tif (existing file)

DSC_1122-edit.tiff (new file)

This hangs Lightroom v10.11 on a 2018 Macbook Pro running Big Sur

Are these files on the boot drive? Your boot drive in Big Sur is APFS, but the "case sensitive" option is OFF by default now in both APFS and HFS+, so you wouldn't be able to have both files you mention in the same folder (unless you formatted as Case Sensitive). Here's the advice from How To Geek:

"Our recommendation is to avoid case sensitivity for both APFS and Mac OS Extended unless you have a specific reason for wanting it. There’s not many benefits to turning it on, but all kinds of things might break, and dragging files from one to the other might mean data loss."

Perhaps Lightroom Sync doesn't like case sensitivity? Perhaps Adobe reps or Victoria can enlighten us on this? In the meantime, change one file name and move on.

Thanks, I didn't know there was a case sensitive option. (And these files are on a Synology NAS, if that matters.)

Also, however, the two files in question have different extensions -- it appears LR is treating "tif" and "tiff" as the same file. Or at least that is how I can explain the hang.

I created two files, one with TIF and one with tiff.

Imported the TIF

Syncronized to import the tiff.  Worked fine

This was on Catalina.

Yeah, it was the "E" in "Edit" that was messing it up.

I changed my test to more accurately reflect the OP situation and Synchronize worked fine

Imported greG.tif

Did Synchronize folder

Imported greg.tiff

Most likely something to do with Big Sur and/or the Network.

"And these files are on a Synology NAS, if that matters."

I recall threads perhaps a few years ago about Synology getting case-sensitivity wrong even when the volume is configured to be case-insensitive.

Here is a related thread (not one of the ones I was thinking about) where a case-sensitive Synology volume crashes LR when doing batch renames:

https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-batch-rename-crash-due-to-upperlower-case-extension-mix/5f5f46154b561a3d4272d235

The received wisdom is that LR works best with Synology volumes that:

- Are case-insensitive

- Use SMB rather than AFP (Apple deprecated AFP a long time ago)

Yeah, SMB officially replaced AFP as the file protocol like at least 10 years ago on the Mac.
