Lightroom: LR3 is importing everything as blanks

Help! Everything I try to import comes up as a blank gray box. The files open fine in other programs.

If the file loads in Develop fine, then it sounds like Lightroom is failing to render the previews for some reason. One thing to try would be moving the Previews file to the trash. The following instructions assume that everything is in the default locations and has the default names. If you've placed your Lightroom catalog somewhere else, or named it something else, these steps might be somewhat different.

1. Quit Lightroom.
2. In the Finder, go to your Pictures folder and click on the Lightroom folder (/Users/user_name/Pictures/Lightroom).
3. In the Lightroom folder, select the "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" file and move it to the trash.
4. Don't empty the trash just yet! You might want to move that file back if this doesn't make any difference.
5. Relaunch Lightroom.

That will remove all of your preview files, and may successfully prompt Lightroom to re-render all of the previews, including the ones that are currently just showing as gray squares. Let me know if this works or not.

P.S. Make sure you're just throwing out the Previews file! Don't accidentally throw out any of your photos, and don't accidentally throw out the catalog file (called "Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat").

DId it ever work? If so, what changed? What OS? Do you have the latest Lightroom updates?

Yes, it used to work. Nothing changed, I was working on files, and it just stopped working correctly. Mac OS X 10.6.7 Latest lightroom update I have is 3.4.1

Actually, come to think of it, I just added some presets from onOne Software a few days ago.

Most of the time, this is caused by a corrupted display color profile.

If it's a corrupted display color profile, would my already imported photos be displaying just fine? Is there something I can do about it?

I can see other photos in Library mode, but not the newly imported photos. If I bring the gray ones to develop mode and double click, the image loads to where I can see it. But if I go back to Library mode, it's gray again.

Go into your Advanced Display Properties and in the Color Management tab, set your profile to sRGB-whatever and see if things start to work.

This is usually caused by a monitor-manufacturer ICC4 profile which Adobe products are not compatible with.

Another possibility is a video-driver issue that sometimes you can resolved with a driver update.
