Lightroom: Make grouped photos easier to differentiate in grid view

When photos are grouped (either manually or because there are virtual copies) the expanded group is too hard to tell apart from the rest of the grid. Some minor adjustments to the design could greatly improve this, making it easier to navigate within groups of photos. See attached.

Obviously this is just a quick mockup, I'm not suggesting to literally use my design — just find some way to better differentiate groups.

Are you serious that you think that background color shift is subtle? It's enormous and unbelievably obvious to me. Is your monitor or monitor calibration messed up, perhaps?

No, my monitor is well calibrated (I use two different pro NEC monitors and see the same thing on both.) The color shift in the current app is very subtle, it's only a 20% darkening of the surrounding gray, which is fairly minor when you take into account all the distraction of thumbnails and text within the grid view.

I want something that pops — I mean, you group photos for a reason so it makes sense to want to see them isolated to some degree. I think the main problem is that the header/footer don't darken enough so you get this disconnect between metadata and the image area.

Good idea.

I'd also like the ability for a photo to be in more than one group. Instead of just "the stack", e.g. nested groups... That way I could have a raw/jpeg group, and a externally edited version also grouped in there, but without breaking the burst or hdr grouping...

Cheers,
Rob
