Lightroom: Option to Duplicate a Collection Set Tree

I use Collection Sets to organize my client information and have a set of about 8 Collections or Sets (including Smart Collections, Web Galleries, and Print Collections) that I create for every client. It would be great to be able to right click the top-most Collection Set in the hierarchy, right click, choose Duplicate, and have it create a duplicate copy of the entire Collection Set Tree.

Right now I either have to do this manually every time or use a kludgy workaround by importing a catalog that contains the Collections I want. To do so each part of the Tree must contain at least one image since empty collections don't get imported when you import a catalog. That's a bug I will enter separately...

Why in the name of flexibility would you do this?

I don't know what flexibility has to do with it?

I do it so that I know exactly what images I have processed in each step of my workflow.

It's the same idea as duplicating a folder in windows. Is that not something you would ever do?

I am sorry Sean, I failed to elaborate on 'flexibility'. In a way, this particular issue has everything to do with it.

I work as a user experience researcher when I am not taking photographs, and we use a set of heuristics to evaluate any user interface, such as LR in this case.

One of the heuristics is called "Flexibility and efficiency of use", or in short, simply, "Flexibility" which dictates that a user interface must provide "accelerators -- unseen by the novice user -- may often speed up the interaction for the expert user such that the system can cater to both inexperienced and experienced users. Allow users to tailor frequent actions."

Lightroom is an excellent example of providing accelerators, in the form of multitudes of keyboard shortcuts. However, it falls short on the latter half of the heuristic, i.e., allowing users to tailor frequent actions.

It's more of a jargon, and I apologize for using it without context.

It would be trivial to implement this with a plugin (e.g. as a plugin extra on the file menu), but would you use it?, or would you just "make do" until Adobe "comes through"...

YES!
I would use it, provided it works reliably and without destroying my files. Can you make something like it?

You can duplicate a collection set tree using Collection Agent.

There are some setup prerequisites if collection sets to be duplicated contain smart collections, but hopefully it'll be an improvement over your existing method.

I think it's great that there are now plugins available to do this, but I can't for the life of me understand why this isn't native functionality.

I can - there are only 24 hours in Adobe's days, and $100(or300)/copy in their budget.

Still, I understand your frustration...

PS - Adobe knew a long time ago they wouldn't be able to plug every hole in Lightroom - that's why they made the SDK. I get frustrated with holes in the SDK!

The collection agent doesn't work with Lightroom 2 for Mac :(

Right - Lightroom 3 or better - Mac+Windows.

The functions needed to do the job are not available in Lightroom 2 SDK - it would be essentially impossible to do for Lightroom 2.

Aditya - I think its finally time to upgrade ;-)

Allow the duplication of a collection set AND it's constituent collections so you can rapidly re-create the structures you use for event photography. Put 2 options with it - copy hierarchy and to have the collections also include existing photos if desired, along with a text tag to make names catalog unique - pre or post appended. Or, a template structure to be used as a master to achieve the same result. It's a pain to set these up as is in LR CC.

@Rikk Wait. What? For real? That doesn't seem likely. I asked for this like 10 years ago.

Wow. It's real. That's unreal.
