How do you mask a smart layer to a layer?

Hello fellow designers, I'm trying to use a clipping mask to mask a effect with a square. Only thing is, I don't get the option to use a clipping mask nor can I press ALT and do it that way. The effect is a smart layer not sure if that affects it at all. I have attached a few images below.

Hi,

From your screenshot, it seems that your SO layer is in a folder but your shape layer is outside the folder. Try to move your SO layer under the shape layer, then move your shape layer under the SO again so you make sure they are on the same hierarchy tree. It should work now.
