Lens Blur filter not working on Smart Object layer

I already posted this yesterday but it doesn't show up so I'll post it again. I had to roll back from 22.1 to 22.0.1 to be able to use the Spot Healing tool.

Now I have run into something else that appears odd.

The Lens Blur filter will not work on a Smart Object layer.

I am trying to create an action to apply an adjustable lens blur and be able to run that option in batch on a number of open images, then edit each individually afterward..

I get as far as removing the subject from a copy of the background layer, then making that layer "Smart" then clicking Filter / Lens Blur

and that filter will not open.

I made a similar action that uses a 9 point Field Blur filter on a smart object layer and it works fine. I just wanted to create one that uses the Lens Blur filter because of that filter's ability to better control the lens shape. The action would apply the blur as starting point and then after running it in batch I could visit each photo and make adjustments to suit the photo.

Can't do that if the filter won't even open on Smart Object layer.

All this is just to keep up to smart phones and their ability to create nice out of focus backgrounds via their automatic depth mapping. I'm sure someday real cameras will catch up ...or perhaps Adobe will, but that will be counterproductive for EXPENSIVE lens sales so I'm sure the camera manufacturers have no desire to incorporate depth mapping into their equipment.

Didn't mention that the subject is of course copied onto another layer as well, :)
