Panning/Move tool with space bar while using the pen tool freezes the window/viewer

Using the pen tool to trace an object - the zoomed in view of the object freezes in the window while panning, or using the space bar and pen tool together.

Detail and context:

I am editing furniture products, specifically removing the backgrounds so that the products are isolated on a transparent background. I have found the Smart Select Tool to not be as efficient as advertised, or plainly, not as smart as I anticipated it to be - so I use the pen tool to create paths around an object before converting those paths into a selection. This gives me greater control.

I often have to zoom in to the negative spaces, and I use the space bar to pan through the window while creating anchor points with the pen tool. The last few days have been difficult to get anything done because I can only get a few anchor points down before the viewer freezes while panning and I cannot lay down any more anchor points.

  • I have to save my progress when this happens, and then restart drawing from where I left off.
  • I have updated Photoshop to it's latest version as of 8 September 2020, as well as restarted my PC to ensure that changes have been applied.

Is there anyone else experiencing this issue?

Have similar issue, mainly with pen tool, but other tools can glitch as well (i.e. blur tool, burn tool e.t.c.). Current view freezes, cursor turns to standart windows arrow, and nothing can be done with editied image, except close or save. Only current canvas hangs. All menus, panels e.t.c. still accessible. Even another (previous) opened, and not closed, image still works without issues. You can save/close/reopen affected document, and continue editing, even without rebooting or reloading photoshop. But next freez will happen much sooner in this case.
When image freezed, task manager show 10...15% CPU load for Photoshop processes (comparing with ~0.1%, when all works OK). Not sure, but it seems, Firefox, or MPC BE, working in background on secondary monitor, make this issue to happens more often.
Disabling GPU acceleration solve this problem.

My current config are:
Windows 10 (2004), completely updated.
Photoshop 2020 (latest update installed)
AMD Ryzen 2600x CPU, 16GB RAM (not overclocked).
NVIDIA RTX 2070S GPU, with GameReady driver version 452.06 (UPD: In Hotfix driver 452.22 this frezes less frequent, IMHO)
Wacom Intuos 5M tablet, with latest driver, and disabled WindowsInk features (Wacom configurator+PSUserConfig.txt file)

Also, may be this problem connected to:

Version 21.2.3 - problem still here. Not sure, but, seems, if Mozilla Firefox are running in background, freezes are more frequent.

dwayne, I see that you are using a PC, and a version out in september, are you using a graphic tablet? are you using wintab or windows ink? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/enable-optional-extensions-photoshop-cc.html#turn_off_system_stylus

I've the same problem with 21.2.2 version of Photoshop, while using the Wacom Intuos S.
It happens every 20-30 minutes.
When using the pen tool and I try to pan the image with spacebar pressed while using the pen to drag the image to move, the canvas freezes and CPU usage spikes up (fan starts spinning) and can't anything.
Luckily I still can save the file and close it. If I reopen it, without closing PS, afterwards the problem is gone.
Until the next time (usually every 15-30 minutes).

My system is a PC with i7 10875H 8 core CPU, 32GB of DDR4, nVidia RTX 2070 8GB, 144hz IPS display, Windows 10 2004 build 19041.508.
nVidia drivers version 451.67. Intel UHD 630 drivers version 26.20.100.7642.

Laptop is PCSpecialist Vyper III with the latest bios v1.06.

Hi mate,

unfortunately the issue is still there, even on the latest PS version so far (22.5.0).

Don't know if it's a issue caused by PS, nVidia drivers or Wacom drivers, as I am using this combination of hardware in my workflow.

It's a shame they didn't fixed it yet.
