Photoshop 22.1: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Working on MacBook Pro 2017 (8g memory) running Big Sur

Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

Different user. Same problem. Update 22.1.1 doesn't fix continuous program errors when exporting, flattening, or duplicating. Cannot save any files.

@JeffreyTranberry

My problems with sporadicall ”could not save because of a program error” seems to have been solved by this update.

The update seems to have fixed the errors I was getting when trying to save or export images. I am on a Windows 10 64-bit system. Thank you.

Hi Ivan, are you on Mac or windows? If you choose Preferences>Plug-ins and uncheck "Enable Generator" and restart PS do you have trouble saving the file using the same steps?

that fixed it! what does the generator do and why is it that it works when you disable it?

It's a known issue with Generator. Will be fixed in an update very shortly.

I'm having the same issue with the Photoshop CC 2014 on a Mac.

When I open my Photoshop files or just a regular image JPG and I do a couple of edits and I cant save over the exiting files...

Any ideas??

And this is the window I get!

When trying to save a psd file, I get a message 'cannot save due to program error'. However in the folder that it should be saving to, it leaves a file with a massive string of numbers that has the changes in it, and that I can open! It creates a new copy of the 'numbers' file each time I try to save.

What OS are you on? Are you saving to the local drive or an external drive, network drive or server?

I'm having the same problem. Attempting to save to a NAS server. Looks like a file permission error.

Problem solved by deleting PS preference files: https://helpx.adobe.com/au/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Retracting last message: Program error message appearing again. I can save to my local desktop after granting PS 2021 access to the local Desktop folder, but not sure how to grant it access to the server. Any hints?

Has anyone else encountered this problem and figured out a solution? I have tried working from a psd file on the desktop as well as on an external drive and it will sometimes let me save once and then gives me an error if I try to save again. I am using the latest version of PS

I have had the exact same issue. Sometimes if I restart photoshop it will work correctly for the first 1 or 2 saves. Otherwise I saw somewhere else that by unchecking all other layers, except the background, you can save. This has worked for me but is obviously annoying as all hell with files that have many layers. I hope this gets fixed.

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving

This is creating MAJOR problems for me...

5 Messages

Apparently I can't flatten layers either, or even saving out to PNG, etc - this is even more troubling -

41 Messages

Yea same. can't merge certain layers.

1 Message

Same, seems to happen to me after using the line or rectangle tool both rasterized or not. After I cant save, save as ( ive different file types) or merge layers.

When I delete the layer with the ex. rectangle or line it will allow me to save again.

Cannot open any image, without disabling graphics processor - but it automatically reloads. Cannot close PS 22.1 without using task master. Windows 10 also updated today, so where the issue lies I don't know?

Lost a lot of work today because I could not save my work due to program error. It would not let me create a stamped layer either.

It seems as more updates are pushed out, the worse the performance of the program gets. I hope the developers do a better job in the future. It's frustrating to lose an entire day of work because of this.

For those having this problem, if you restore your preferences using this manual method does it work correctly:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Assisted support says this has helped the customers they've helped. We'd like to get a copy of your settings folder if this does correct the problem.

Hi Jeff - saving did not work when I opened up the larger psd file I had been working on but did work when I opened a jpg file and saved down as a psd. BTW, I am on a Windows 10 OS. Will not attach folder since this did not fix the problem. Thanks.

Please let me be clear. This bug is making PS unusable for many people. The fact you've known about it for many months, and not addressed it is extremely disappointing.

Windows 10 - and it *seems* like the problem started after a Windows update. But I'm not certain. I have PS on a desktop and a laptop (both Windows 10) and the desktop is not having the same problem.

Also, apologies for the curtness of the post. I had lost the entire afternoon and was fairly frustrated.

@Jchacin @Gavin Rolph

Hi there, My name is Sympa and I'm an Engineer with the GPU team. I am so sorry that you're experiencing this problem. Truly I understand the impact it can have on workflow and I want to help. What you're describing sounds possibly related to the GPU team. Send me an email at sympa@adobe.com with answers to the below?

  • Are your applications installed in the default operating system directory or a custom directory? If custom, please specify the path being used?
  • Do you have more than one graphics card? Are they the same make and model? Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
  • Do you have updated drivers for peripherals (Wintab, Wacom), and GPU (NVidia, AMD):
  • Are you using more than one monitor? Does it repro if only laptop display is used?
  • Attach to the bug report this file: Finder > Top Menu > Apple > About This Mac > System Report... > File > Save > FileName.spx
  • Is the GPU being run in a virtualized environment?:
  • Have you turned off GPU in preferences → performance?:
  • Does turning on this setting fix your issue? legacy compositing in preferences → performance:
  • Did this behave correctly in a previous version of photoshop (which?):
  • Is the issue reproducible on both Mac & Windows?:
  • Reproducibility (sometimes? 100%?):
  • Include file that reproduces this issue:
  • Attach to bug report a screen recording of you following the steps needed to arrive at reproducing this issue:
  • Attach to bug report a screen recording of expected behavior:
  • Attach to bug report the log from help → system info:

@Sympa what are the parameters for Windows 10?

I can say the following:

  • Are your applications installed in the default operating system directory or a custom directory? If custom, please specify the path being used?
    DEFAULT
  • Do you have more than one graphics card? Are they the same make and model? Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
  • ONE CARD ONLY
  • Do you have updated drivers for peripherals (Wintab, Wacom), and GPU (NVidia, AMD):
  • SUFACE PRO LAPTOP - DRIVERS UP TO DATE
  • Are you using more than one monitor? Does it repro if only laptop display is used?
  • YES
  • Attach to the bug report this file: Finder > Top Menu > Apple > About This Mac > System Report... > File > Save > FileName.spx
  • PATH IN WINDOWS?
  • Is the GPU being run in a virtualized environment?:
  • NO
  • Have you turned off GPU in preferences → performance?:
  • YES, DID NOT HELP
  • Does turning on this setting fix your issue? legacy compositing in preferences → performance:
  • Did this behave correctly in a previous version of photoshop (which?):
  • Is the issue reproducible on both Mac & Windows?:
  • WINDOWS ONLY
  • Reproducibility (sometimes? 100%?):
  • 100%
  • Include file that reproduces this issue:

Seriously. We shouldn't have to do this. We pay for this product. Any updates with bugs this massive shouldn't have been released in the first place. Fix this and do better in the future.

Hi Sympa and Jeff, thanks for your responses, I have emailed this but thought I would post it here to help others.

The error we are having is using photoshop on 2 different Macs ( 1 iMac 27inch 2019 and 1 MacBook Pro 13inch  2017 ), both started doing it at the same time, one had just been updated to 22.1 the other had not (but continued with the issue after updating)
I am not at either Mac right now but if nothing has changed I will produce a bug report for you later.
This happens 100% of the time with whatever file type however I try and save it.
Tried turning off GPU on MacBook which didn’t work either.
Can’t attach file as they belong to clients and also it happens on all files so not applicable anyway.
Everything else you asked is a no or not applicable.
Just to be clear that another days loss of productivity is not acceptable at our busiest time of year and will result in the loss of our custom.

Seems to have been fixed with an update this morning!

please please don’t release such buggy versions of software, you are a company supplying millions of professionals who can’t afford to loose a days work. Your product is the most expensive on the market and as such we expect a product to match, I don’t feel that I am getting that compared to the other options at the moment.

Gone are the days when Adobe was the only option.

@Gavin what sort of update did you do that made it go away? 22.1 is the most current version and what the original poster was reporting on.

@Natasha Heyland @JeffreyTranberry

that confused me too, but yesterday morning my MBP said updated today when I checked creative cloud and was fixed, iMac is the same.
both were updated to 22.1 the day before.

A little frustrated that this new update wiped my photoshop settings, that cost me extra time to reimport etc.

Adobe can’t seem to get much right at the moment. But at least I have some gimmicky features like sky replacement 😒
