Photoshop: Can't drag files into CS6

Why can't I drag files into Photoshop cs6 like I used to be able to do in previous versions? I used to be able drag files from their folders into photoshop to open them, but now I no longer can. I can open files using mini bridge, but it's a much much slower workflow. I'm using Windows 7.

Julia, something may be going on with your install. Using Win 7 64bit here and I have just tested drag/drop the following files (.jpg, .png, .psd, .cr2, & .mov) from Win Exp. with no issue directly into Ps CS6 64bit.

What is happening when you drag files into Photoshop?

If you drag onto an open document, they should be placed in the document.
If you drag onto some other part of Photoshop, they should just open, as in previous versions.

One would think that, but that is not the case. Photoshop treats the dragged image as a new image. You'll have to do it the hard way: Copy and paste.

The same issue was there for me when using windows 7 and then on windows 10. I used the same registry tweak and it fixed my issue. You can check the steps https://www.techrounder.com/tips/fix-drag-drop-problem-photoshop/

I uninstalled/reinstalled just Photoshop, and when that didn't change anything I uninstalled/reinstalled the entire creative suite (with the preferences this time), and it looks like everything is working like it should now. Thank for your help.

I can't get this to work either, unless there are no other images open, and have uninstalled / reinstalled the whole suite. These were all downloaded and installed using Creative Cloud. When I try to drag files from Windows Explorer, I just get the circle with a line through it. I CAN place images with drag and drop, but cannot open them by dragging them into the title bar or other parts of the Photoshop window.

I have the same issue. When I drag files from apps (Windows Explorer, Java IDE, ...) and try dropping them into Photoshop CS6 I see the "no entrance" cursor.
It makes no difference if I have or don't have open images in Photoshop.

System info:
Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1 20120808.r.519 2012/08/08:21:00:00) x64
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:10, Stepping:5 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading

That means that your registry entries that describe what file formats Photoshop can read are messed up.

Thanks. That was a first time typical installation on this computer, nothing custom so I don't know how my entries got messed up.

How can I resolve the issue?

I'm not sure. Your registry database could be corrupt for some reason, or some utility may have removed registry entries in error.
Reinstalling the app might help - but if the database is corrupt, it might not.

I have found if you are running PS as an administrator you can't drag and drop from explorer. When I run PS NOT as an administrator, drag and drop works normally.

Hey, so I had the same drag and drop issue for days now and none of the online videos on threads helped.

Figured out the solution while tinkering around myself.

So, you need to right click on the Photoshop.exe file and go to Properties.
Go to the Security Tab.
Check the permissions your user account has for the application. What I saw was that I had very limited permissions for the application. Once I changed that and gave my user account all the permissions, Photoshop has been working as normal and the drag and drop issue is now in the past.

Hope this helps you too.

Hi guys,
I fixed it for me in Windows 10 after an hour of frustration.
First, I did what Danesh M suggested above.
Then in the compatibility tab, I run the troubleshooter, tested the program and saved the settings.
It worked like a charm, basically I changed the compatibility to windows 8 but you should just run the troubleshooter.
Finally, I run the program from the windows folder and pinned it to the taskbar.
A restart would help too :)

its pretty sad that thousands of people have an issue and a million dollar company will offer no fix. insane.

So far about 8 people have reported this issue. Others aren't having a problem with dragging files.

People not reporting in this tread doesn't mean they don't have the problem.

Got this problem with PS:CS6 on Win10. None of the solutions worked. Very frustrating.

Update: here's a solution that worked for me: https://youtu.be/244QZV38YoA
(set EnableLUA parameter to 0 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and restart system)

Win10 and CS6 as well, frustated, but exactly this works. Thanks a lot. Note that there's a side effect, I think no apps can open, at least that goes for Edge.

Right, built-in Windows apps like calculator refuse to open.
I replaced CS6 with CC 2015, in which dragging works without workarounds.

Worked like a champ...  Thank you so much, this saves so much time.  Adobe should have fixed this as it we have always been able to drag and drop since the first PhotoShop.  Don't like the way they did a lot of the settings in CS6.  Another was the dark background screen.
Thanks again.

The solution from the video www.youtube.com/watch?v=244QZV38YoA worked for me perfectly. Thanks to Alex Klyuev and HDPredator.

Hey guys! When opening a new document check the RGB value! It must be 8 in order for the drag image to work!

First you need to select tool then you are able to drag and drop your file using Photoshop portable CS6.
Or maybe you need a new setup which you can easily get from this link,
