Photoshop CC 2015: Dragging layer to a layer group puts it at the top instead of bottom

Photoshop CC 2015 > Layers panel

Previously when you dragged a layer in Layers panel and released it over a layer group, it was added to the end of the layers within a group. Now it is added to the top of the layers in the group.
Is this an intended behavior in new Photoshop? It kind of breaks what we've been used to.

Hi all,

Sorry for a delayed response to this thread- I have been having this conversation with a few other folks in other channels, but want to respond directly here as well.

It might be helpful to share a little background into why this change was made before getting into what we are going to do about it to address your concerns. In the development of artboards, it became clear that our existing layer dropping behavior would be problematic. It prompted a wider look into the behavior, and in our discussions with users this change was perceived as a positive one. The prevailing sentiment from our testers was that although they were used to the old behavior, the new behavior would be a welcome change that they could adapt their workflows to (adding layers to the top of the z-order is also how many other apps behave).

It is clear though that (as illustrated in this thread) there are legitimate cases where the old workflow is preferred and needs to be available. We will be adding a keyboard modifier (hold shift) to revert to the old behavior and drop a layer to the bottom of the Z-order.

Thanks for your patience with this change- we're hoping to make the experience better for you soon!

Can you tell us when (approximately) we can expect this?
(This actually hinders me in my work...)

It will be available in the coming weeks. (Sorry I can't be more specific!)

In the Photoshop CC 2015.1 update released today, a new keyboard modifier (Shift) will control if layers get added to the bottom of groups: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/usi...

I'm on 2015.1.1 PS and guess what. IT DOES NOT WORK.

Works for me. Press shift, then click and drag to the group.

Yep that works. Was pressing shift mid way drag... Now still can we have tickbox to rever back to original program? I'm facing now a task of rewriting few plugins for PS because this action is actually breaking down my layering software....

This change shouldn't affect legacy actions. Are you saying that playing an action recorded in an older version of Photoshop played in the new version plays back differently? Or that actions recorded in the new version don't play correctly in legacy version of Photoshop. You should probably create a new topic if it's breaking actions.

Havent tested it yet but I'm fairly sure it will break all my JS/Python plugins for PS as they were all based on the fact the layers dragged in to group will be dropped at the bottom of group not at the top. Havent used 2015 in production due to http://feedback.photoshop.com/photosh... issue but looking at the changes I can only see troubles. Will do a test tomorrow and post up the result.

Yes, I believe that is an intended change designed to put the layers closer to where most users want them.

That's not a good way to do things. Kaleb Wyman's idea is much better!

This also bothers me. There is no setting to allow the user to determine which way it will behave? After using Photoshop for so many years, this change is frustrating. It is easy to drag a layer to anywhere in the group, except the bottom of a layer group. Having it default to the bottom when dropped on the folder was the easy way to have the layer go to the bottom of the group.

"It is easy to drag a layer to anywhere in the group, except the bottom of a layer group."

Precisely this. Really annoying!

Ideally, we need a modifier key that can switch this behavior when dragging layers into a group on the fly...

There are use cases where dragging and dropping a layer into a layer group would best be added to the BOTTOM, and other times where adding to the TOP is better.
It really depends on the nature of the elements being composited or organized.

Best recommendation:

Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the bottom (default behavior most expect)
Shift + Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the top (new behavior using a modifier)

The previous behavior was there since layer sets were introduced in Photoshop. There absolutely were no reason why to change it! Its simply annoying to get used to this new interaction. Its like learning the new keyboard shortcut for a function you've been using for ages without a way to change it.

+1 for modifier key at least @Kaleb

This is so incredibly irritating! When using a tool is second nature and you're fast and then a stupid little thing like this comes and COMPLETELY breaks my flow state, it might seem small, but it completely destroys my flow of productivity and creativity.

Please acknowledge and FIX this Adobe!

You can't just change how something works and not allow users to go back to the previous behaviour.

I thought after using it the new way for a few months I would get used to it, but it is still frustrating me. I almost never add a layer to the top of a group and, as mentioned before, it is much easier to accurately drag onto the top than the bottom.

Shift+Command+Bracket is helpful, but it's still a full stop "in my flow"...

I have this problem also - Why would you change this guys?

+1 for the modifier keys at least suggested by @Kaleb

Also, does any body else get frustrated by how the scrollbar inside the layers pane jumps around whenever you put a layer into a folder / group? IMO this is HORRRIBLE ux - what does everybody else think?!?

@ADOBE: Is it possible to disable this annoying scroll jumping somehow?!

First, go install the 2015.0.1 update.

Was something changed in 2015.0.1 to help this? I didn't see anything that really discussed this in the release notes: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...

Yes, there are a couple of fixes related to layer dragging and reordering. And even if you don't see it in the release notes, you still need all the bug fixes in the dot release.

So is there a modifier key or something? Not trying to be dense here but I don't see it changed after the update and see no way to change the behavior. Does it now just drop the layer at the bottom of the group for you?

Installed 2015.0.1 and I see no change/fix/option for changing this back to the way it has been forever (dropping a layer in a group has always put it at the bottom of the group -- that is where I want it). Putting it on top is not obviously better -- just different. Fine if you want to enable this, but seems like it should be a panel option and/or behind a modifier key so you don't mess with people's work flow.

I drop layers into a group 10-20 times a day. It may seem hyperbolic, but I'd downgrade back to the previous version just to revert this change if I could (my company has a site license, not CC and the old version is no longer available). Perhaps time to switch to Sketch. :(

Agreed. This behavioral change is not a good one.

Fuc.... irritating!!!

Please use Kaleb Wyman's suggestion:

Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the bottom (default behavior most expect)
Shift + Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the top (new behavior using a modifier)

Really annoying. I am waisting time every day.

I agree to Kaleb Wyman's suggestion:

Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the bottom (default behavior most expect)
Shift + Drag into Layer group: Add layers to the top (new behavior using a modifier)

This change of behaviour is very annoying.

Please, give us at least the option to choose it, or as suggested, give us both options.

Man so frustrating - just came looking for a solution to change my layer functions back to how they were, only to find you all with the same problem. Adobe, you guys listening to this? Can you give us a preference to revert?
