Photoshop CC 2015: Dragging layer to a layer group puts it at the top instead of bottom

Photoshop CC 2015 > Layers panel

Previously when you dragged a layer in Layers panel and released it over a layer group, it was added to the end of the layers within a group. Now it is added to the top of the layers in the group.
Is this an intended behavior in new Photoshop? It kind of breaks what we've been used to.

This is absurd! Such a small detail changed my workflow so drastically. please fix this! I also think a preference to revert would be best

+1 Kaleb Wyman's suggestion. Or just put it back to dropping it to the bottom of the group. Current functionality is killing my flow.

Thank you, Joel,
sounds reasonable. And keyboard modifier would certainly help.

Thanks, Joel. I like the keyboard modifier. Right now it's extremely difficult to add a layer or group to the right "bottom" of a group. Dragging it to the bottom of the right group and getting it to stay where you want it (and not go inside the bottom most nested layer) takes me like 5 tries every time. Thanks so much for looking out for us. —Ben

I don't see why dragging in the layer pallet can't do something different than dragging on the canvas between artboards. I wish shift was the modifier to keep at the top but I'll appreciate there being any way to do it.

5 Months and this still isn't resolved! This is one of the most infuriating changes I've ever had in any software. It's not a willingness to learn a new way but the difficulty in placing a layer at the bottom of a group without it going outside the folder that is my problem.

Kaleb Wyman's solution would be perfect.

Good to hear you'll have a fix. This is incredibly annoying. It's so much harder to drag something to the bottom of a group than to the top. If I want it on the top, I'll drag it to the top.

Although I'd much rather this be a pref, not a modifier... I use my laptop a ton and that's really tough to hit a modifier with the trackpad.

I don't understand why every update, legacy changes are made without an option to revert to the previous way things have been done for year. This comes up again and again with each update. Stop over focus testing stuff and use simple logic.

Great!

But is should really be the other way around: Holding shift to place the layer at the top...

Thanx annyway

Agree, this should be opposite!

Hey Adobe, can we delay our subscription payments for 6 months ? if you don't care for us (users doh!), why should we care for you ...

Not mention that artboards in PS are unusable, any bigger project using them feel extremely heavy (on latest fully loaded MBP), there is no point change very strong behavior (drag to bottom of the layers stack) based on new feature (artboards).

At least give us option (key shortcuts) to modify this, is this really that hard ? I believe not really.

We definitely care about the users, which is why we added the modifier. In case there is any confusion, the modifier is in today's update. But I would love to speak to you more about your experience with Artboards and try to troubleshoot the issues you're having. Please reach out to me directly

Joel, it took Adobe 6 months to add a simple modifier, it speak for itself, it should be done immediately (1-2 weeks).

It takes time to ship stuff, Dominik. From the outside it looks like an easy thing to do (just push the “Deploy to Every Photoshop User” button), but Photoshop is used by tens/hundreds thousands (maybe millions, idk?) of people all over the world. It didn’t take Adobe six months to ship a modifier update, it took them six months to ship a whole ton of new features, one of which is a modifier update. Adobe is a big company, which means that deploying changes to users is something a lot of people at Adobe have to agree on. Whipping up a little change is quick and easy. Dealing with the people that are responsible for making that change go live to everyone takes time.

Where is the modifier? Because I don't see any tickbox in options to go back to legacy system.

7 months later and Adobe still forcing users to the new behavior. Is it too difficult to add a checkbox "Dropped layers on group goes to the bottom" to the Preferences pane?

The Shift+drag behavior is terrible. I WANT THE LAYER TO BE DROPPED ON THE BOTTOM NOT ON THE TOP. Don't make me remember to press Shift everytime I want to drop a layer on a group.

It is a beautiful world when announcing features, but for christ sake. Think a little about the user experience. Relearning a software we've used for years it's annoying as h*ll (censured 'cause Adobe is "a family site", as the alert box said).

You have just broken down my program of 5000 lines that was stacking layers for me. Great thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want option in settings to have tick on legacy options. I do not want to go in and rewrite hundreds of lines of code because you decided to change stuff again !

You should have make it that drag + Shift would put it on top. Not Drag + Shift to get legacy option !!

Jezus Adobe... Keep it up I'll unsubscribe before 2016 hit the shelfs.

I wonder do you guys think before you do fundamental changes? I mean can you imagine the pain that every CGI-Retouching studio has to go through with this latest release of PS and the costs of rewriting softwares and upgrading them to work with the new un-wanted mechanics?

Reordering layers with ExtendScript is trivial. If something broke in your script, it’s because either you or whoever wrote your script didn’t specify where in the layerSet the layer should be placed in the first place.

The modifier works, its fine. The only what I do love to have changed about it is the following.
Currently you kind of need to decide in advance where you want to have the layer you are about to drag. E.g. you need to press Shift and then start dragging, otherwise the modifier is ignored.
In reality when working with dozens to hundreds layers with lots of nested layers sets you kind of decide on the fly: you start to drag layer, find the needed layers set, and only then decide if you want the layer to be on the top or on the bottom, but if you press Shift at this point it is ignored.
The ideal behavior: detect Shift modifier on the mouse release event (instead on mouse down).

I know, sound like a minor issue. Yes it is. But it is about productivity: currently modifier makes little sense to me: I decide to use it on the fly, it doesn't work, and I have to 'thoughtfully' repeat layer drag with Shift press in advance.

Please consider changing it.

I'm up with other guys.

Legacy back as standard
and then as you say.

Click>Drag>Shift>Drop on top>no Shift drop on bottom...
Would have en amazing feature if implemented this way from start.

I agree. I am glad there is a modifier, but for some reason it doesn't always work, and I think it is because I am clicking the layer slightly before holding the shift key. Then I have to do it again, consciously thinking about it. There are many other programs and tasks that require a modifier, and they must work even if the modifier is pressed after the item is selected because I have never noticed this problem before. Hopefully they can improve it if this is how they are going to allow dropping to the bottom of the layer group.

Well they did manage to get to work darg>shift>layer from 1 PSD file to another PSD file. I'm sure they can record shift action after clicking and draging layer... I mean they already have the code for it just needs to use that class with this feature... Still I would prefer to have legacy as default and shift as top move...

1. default should be the way it has been for ages, and shift should put it on top
2. you should be able to press shift after you've started dragging
3. there should be a pref for this so shift isn't required.

thank you

Can we please revert it back to legacy option and have an option added in settings how to configure dropping down layers?

What you guys did is as if imagine Microsoft did this :
Today
CTRL + C will be remapped to CTRL + H
CTRL + V Will be remapped to CTRL + A
CTRL + X will be remapped to CTRL + ALt + H

The backlash MS would get the next day would crash their servers.

You cant just change core functionality after so many years of PS usage! U can add stuff not replace when will you learn it ffs.
