Photoshop CC 2015.5: Select and Mask Horrible Problems

Select and Mask is horrible on a non solid background.
I am a portrait and youth sports photographer.  ALthough the new select and mask is awesome for compositing something deliberate - such as a person on a solid gray background, it is absolutely AWFUL for anything else.  I photograph newborns and often have to remove my assistant's hand from the background of my setup.  These are rarely a solid, uniformed color.  I never had such a problem as I am now.  I am very very proficient in photoshop and I cannot figure this out.  This has been nothing but frustrating.

Do you have the two boxes at the top checked. Un-checking them helped my software to work. I am on a windows 7 platform.

Danielle, would you be able to send me a sample image that has been giving you a tough time? Specifically, I'm looking for examples of images that you feel are more successfully altered with Refine Edge than Select and Mask (if you have them).

I think my problem with the new version is like Danielle's.  Refine Edge is an excellent and important feature that I've been frustrated with since it was changed (and I've tried to make it work).  If this is a weakness of the redesigned feature rather than some setting I can't find that's causing this, then this might be the catalyst (well, along with PS crashing too often) for finally investigating switching to Paintshop Pro. :-/    I'm attaching an image of 3 screenshots.  1 = photo with the 3 players selected, 2 = In Select and Mask after having traced around the player on right, 3 = result of Select and Make --- not even remotely close, and a common scenario.

Melvin, can you provide a link to the source image? I'd like to directly compare the output of Select and Mask with the old refine edge. What selection tool did you use to trace the player on the right? Quick Select? Also, once you entered Select and Mask with your selection, did you re-select the player on the right?

Yes, quick select.  No, didn't reselect -- went with the selection from using quick select before entering Select and Mask.  Thanks for looking into this.

Above is <2MB JPG.  Link to original PNG (if you download Original):

Thanks Melvin, I wasn't able to reproduce the strange behavior you've showed here. Does it consistently behave in this way for you? If so, there may be a bug you've hit. I would like to send you a newer build to see if it's better for you.

I just downloaded Photoshop CC and I'm having the same issues. It does a horrible job refining the edges when the background is not solid or uniform... Like if this was a tool for in studio photoshoots only... if I check decontaminate colors it does even worse. Very disappointed

AMEN!!!! its still a mess!  The refine edge is just OK on a solid background... if you try to make a correction (as it states you can) the corrected pixels are mush and cannot be saved. you have to start from the selection again and hope for the best.

I will create artificial light sometimes behind my clients (for example if they are in the woods) and it is absolutely impossible to use this tool... impossible... its a mess.

I am the one that started this post 3 months ago and there i still no solution

some adobe employees will even tell you it is fixed in CC2017... an obvious lie.

i spend hours on a phone with the adobe "support team".

some even insist that nothing changed on the underlaying core of the tool.
well it is obvious for everyone who uses the tool that it behaves different to the old one.

the overall SILENCE from adobe in this forum is staggering.

dozend of threads and adobe employees can ́t even be bothered to give a statement....

Ridiculous.

As reported here and many times in other places, this feature is *still* broken for even *simple* cases, as I verified myself yesterday. I feel sorry for the support people who have to act as if this is some one-off aberration that will be fixed any day now. Adobe clearly must have better things to do.

I talked of switching to PaintShop Pro Ultimate X9, but haven't done that yet. We'll, I've bought PaintShop. Adobe being as uninterested in listening to their users as this tells me that Corel is a better place to be.

Advice to Adobe: don't make your users frustrated to the point of being mad at you. (Happy is better.)

Hey everyone. The old refine edge is alive and well, just hidden. First make a Selection. Then go to the "Select menu," Hold down SHIFT key and click on Select and Mask. The old reliable Refine edge dialogue will open.

I'm having a different issue from others here, but equally frustrating. When I use the decontaminate color feature in the select and mask dialogue (CC 2017) it creates strange artifacts on the edge of the mask. The mask looks perfect when I output it to a new layer with mask, but if I try to paint parts of the original image back into the mask the artifact are revealed. This is only happening when I check the decontaminate color box.

Danielle,
if you ́re talking about the decontamination problem, you may want to take a look here:
