Photoshop CC: Lengthy delay following changing a color before being able to do anything else. Why and how do I resolve?

When working for some time in Photoshop CC, the program begins to develop a delay between choosing a new color and doing anything else. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes from start-up before the problem presents, so my only solution so far has been to shut down PSCC and restart it.

This wasn't happening with previous versions of PS, so I'm not sure what is causing this, but given that I'm a comic book colorist, you can see how quickly this can get frustrating. Has anyone else run across this? I've GOT to get this fixed and I haven't seen anything related to it yet. Please help!

Which specific version of Photoshop are you using?
Which OS version are you using?

Chris,

You probably don't remember me, but I was a board member on Gutterzombie, and I was just thinking "Where is Chris Cox when I need him?" before I posted this. LOL

Here is my version and OS info. I just got done with a chat session where it was suggested that I delete my temporary files. I'm getting back into working right now, so I should hopefully know in the next hour or so whether that was the proper solution.

Adobe Photoshop Version: 2015.0.1 20150722.r.168 2015/07/22:23:59:59 CL 1032107 x64
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

OK, I don't know of a problem like that on Windows.
MacOS 10.11 has a problem similar to what you describe, which we had to release a plugin to work around.

Do you have any third party plugins or extension panels?
What happens if you disable those?

And yeah, I don't get by gutterzombie that often these days, but do stop by periodically.

I don't believe I have any plug-ins. And I'm not really sure what an extension panel is, so I probably don't have that either. I pulled a few actions and brushes and such over from previous versions, but that's about it.

Still seems like the delay is building back up even after deleting the Temp files.

What temp files are you talking about?
The scratch files don't change unless you change image data. And Photoshop doesn't have any other "temp files".

Normally changing a color doesn't do much, unless you're using the mixer brush, and even that doesn't do much. So there's no reason for a delay when changing colors, unless something else (like a plugin or extension panel) is doing something when the color is changed.

Check Help -> System Info for a list of the installed extension panels and third party plugins.

Kush Singh had me go into my Temp folder for my computer and delete everything in there that could be deleted.

Here's what I copied from the System Info:

Is the Libraries panel shown? If you close the Libraries panel, restart the computer and relaunch Photoshop, do you still have the issue?

No, I don't have the Libraries panel active. Here's a screen cap of my workspace.

I THINK I may have figured out what is causing the delay build-up. I tried shutting off the RECENT COLORS option on the Swatches panel and it so far I haven't experienced the build-up in lag. I'm guessing that PS is remembering more colors in the background than is being displayed on that row in the panel. Hopefully (if that's what it is) that's something that could be easily corrected because that feature is really great and it would be a shame to have to leave it turned off. I'll be working more with it this weekend and if there's no delay build-up, then I'll know for sure that that was the cause.

That's odd. The recently used color list should only be keeping a small number of recently used colors, and shouldn't be taking much time.

We'll see if we can reproduce the problem. (and I'll take a look at that code to see if I can find anything wrong)

I only worked with it for about 30 minutes after I turned the feature off and had to leave the house, so I'm not totally sure, but it did seem to be running faster overall. I'll play around with it more on my end as well when I get back to the house.

I haven't been able to reproduce a slowdown yet.

I checked the code - we're only keeping a maximum of 16 colors in the MRU list.
And all the operations we do with the list are pretty minimal. So I don't see anything obvious about the color MRU list that would cause a slowdown.

If that is the cause, we'll have to delve into windows resource issues and other fun to debug potential causes.

It's definitely stemming from the Recent Colors feature. I've been working for a couple of hours now with the Recent Colors feature turned off and I'm only now noticing a slight lag, but it's like half a second. So I turned the feature back on and it took several seconds to even bring up the swatches. When I changed colors it was back to a 2-3 second lag. I turned the feature back off and it took a couple of seconds to turn it off and then it was back to barely noticeable when I changed colors.

I noticed that even with the Recent Colors turned off it was still remembering the recent colors. When I turned the feature back on, it populated that row of swatches with my most recent color selections rather than starting with an empty list. So that might explain the slight build up of lag I'm noticing even without the feature turned on.

OK, I'm starting to think that there may be a windows specific problem - possibly with the way the swatches are updated or drawn (because the MRU list implementation is really clean). Yes, it still remembers recent colors even if they aren't being shown - that part takes next to no time, but it seems that redrawing the list takes too much time.
