Photoshop: Error "There is a problem with Generator" occurs when launching

First off, this old post from 2016 does not solve the problem
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/error---there-is-a-problem-with-generator--occurs-when-launching.html

Not sure how to "reproduce" the problem, but here are some things to consider:
  1. In Photoshop 21.0.2 the "There is a problem with Generator" occurs when launching Photoshop
  2. In Photoshop 21.0.2 the "There is a problem with Generator" occurs anytime an image is saved, preventing any exporting of JPG, PNG, ect...
  3. The instructions above have to be done over and over and over for EACH image, otherwise the error returns.
  4. Switching back to Photoshop 20.0.8 fixes the problem and the error does not occur
Ergo, there is a problem with 21.0.2

Hi Ged, engineering recently updated this document with common things that cause generator errors and additional details on how Generator works: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/error---there-is-a-problem-with-generator--occurs-when-launching.html Hopefully it is helpful.

Edit: See my post below this comment.

Hi Jeffrey,

This is really strange. I've been using PS v 21.0.3 ever since the update and now today, on opening PS,  I receive this error message  "There is a problem with Generator. Please quit Photoshop and try again. If the problem persists, remove any third-party plug-ins or try to reinstalling Photoshop.

I've not done anything new or installed any new plug-ins. So up until this time, Photoshop 20.0.8 worked fine with all my Plug-ins installed.

The Generator folder in the PS 2020 Plug-ins folder is empty.

I did look at your link about how Generator works so I'm puzzled as to why this problem appears today and not before.

Here is the latest Generator log and I'm hoping someone is able to interpret that for me and see if there is anything in there that may be causing the problem.

I think I may have found a fix for "my" Generator problem.

I have Malwarebytes installed (like forever) and their latest update may have screwed things up with PS's Generator.

So, I added C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2020\node.exe on my allow list in Malwarebytes and re-opened Photoshop and the error with Generator no longer appeared.

To check this I opened Photoshop 20.0.8 and the same Generator error message appeared so I went back into Malwarebytes and added C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\node.exe to the allow list. I re-opened Photoshop 20.0.8 and no error message either.

The link to this problem fix is here for Malwarebytes users:

and this is a screen shot.

This problem still exists in 21.0.3.  I've:

  • Reinstalled Photoshop
  • Whitelisted Node.exe
  • Whitelisted all photoshop files
  • Removed non-default plugins (there were none)
  • Yes, I can disable the generator plugin but now I just add more steps using someone elses product.

Come on Adobe. I hoped this would have been fixed with todays update.

Jeremy, do you have Malwarebytes installed?

Yep, this was exactly the issue. Whitelisted PS 2020 and all is good now.  Turns out it wasn't adobe after all...

Thank you Rosa.

Just adding my confirmation to what Rosa posted.. Whitelisting in Malwarebytes solved the issue for me in 21.0.3
