Photoshop: Image size defaulting back to 1inch by Xinch after cropping. Why?

Every time I crop, my image size usually set to 300 resolution 12"x18" changes to a small size with a ton of resulution. Why?

Check ALL the settings in the crop tool options bar. Most likely you missed something. If in doubt, just reset the crop tool.

To reset a tool, hold down the Control key (mac) or right-click on the Tool Preset Picker on the Tool Options bar and choose "Reset Tool" to reset the selected tool, or "Reset All Tools" to reset the settings for all the tools in Photoshop's tool bar:

I keep resetting the crop tool. I can't get the pics to crop to the size I request. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your response. I have used the reset tools several times with no sucess. Perhaps if I can explain what I am doing it wouls help. I have a new layer up and have selected the shape tool (cookie cutter), I have selected a talk bubble. When I go the the layer I left click and drag the shape. When I release the left click the shape appears and has a box around it. On the right on the layers section rather than having the shape in the layer thumbnail another thunbnail appears directly to the right. If I hit enter the shape disappears. If I go to edit it has undo cookie cutter tool

I have this Cropping Tool malfunction in BOTH CS4 and CS4. In a chat with a technician, I was advised that these two programs were no longer available as a replacement, even when it is proven that I have purchased the CD's and pass keys are active.
This, clearly, is bad policy. The second rule of any retail business is, "Even if a customer is wrong, NEVER, EVER make him feel that he is wrong!!!! Over the years, I have purchased, E2, E3, E6, E8, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4 and CS5. I want replacements for CS4 and CS5! And don't tell me it can't be done! You provide trials, don't you? Well, I am a paying customer and I want to be satisfied! You want my continued business, don't you?
How does this make me feel? Just read this again!

this actually really helped with some surprise severe lag on the brush tool (or not even lag, it just didn't even recognize my clicks at all). Now to continue to try to figure out why all of my brushes are coming out as hard round texture/lack of texture.....
