Photoshop: PNG now sometimes saves with a black background

Ever since I updated to the newest version of Photoshop a few weeks ago some of my .png documents are saving with a black background, and some are not.

Interesting. I saw that a while back in Bridge from PNG files I received from designers sometimes having that black background displayed in Bridge. I resaved in PS to get rid of it.

I haven't had time to test saving PNG files in PS since the update. I'll keep an eye on it going forward now, though. But is this only as displayed in Bridge and PS recognizes they're transparent? If that's the case, it's a Bridge issue returned, though I never did find out why back when I was seeing this often in Bridge.

Can you find any difference at all between the structure of the files? Alpha Channels, for instance?

There is no difference and I do not use Bridge.  I open and save all of my files through Photoshop.

I have also seen them from others designs, but this is the first time it has done it to me.  Those elements were all made within minutes of each other and some have a white background, and some a black one.

That's right. Sorry, I forgot you never use Bridge for anything at all. So where are you viewing them? In Windows Explorer? I trust at least that transparency is preserved.

No matter what you use to display them, it's a puzzle that they should be saving from the same software, same session, such that they display so very differently. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone on the PS team will see this and have a thought. Since it's happened before to both of us (which must translate at least to thousands of others<G>), surely someone at Adobe has tried to figure out why.

One other thought. What are you using to export the PNG files? SFW, Quick Export As, full dialog Export As. . . , exporting through the Layers menu or the main menu? I'm wondering if a glitch got introduced into one of the export features. Or even just Save As. . .

Hi Cristen,

I have never had this happen to me before, but I have seen it with others stuff I have downloaded.

Yes, it does save the transparency, and I save them via File/save as

It's a bug in the trim process.  I always trim my products to save disk space, but I went back in and trimmed it again (it did nothing) but when I closed it and reopened it the black background was gone.

Try it and let me know if it works for you.

Julie, when you open that saved png file with a black background in Photoshop, does that saved png file open with a transparent background in Photoshop?

Hi Rosa,

Yes it does open with a transparent background.  However, I am OCD and this is annoying :-D

I have that happen on occasion to me as well Julie. I have a Windows OS and sometimes when I go to open a transparent png file through Photoshop, the transparent png file has a black background but opens correctly in Photoshop.

I don't see the problem via file explorer only when viewing through PS.

Good sleuthing! I recall a bug in the trim process maybe 3 versions back, but it was preventing me from adding keywords. It would popup a warning that "this file can't accept metadata" or words to that effect. Only if I trimmed it, and not everything I trimmed, and not PNG files I'd created myself. I "solved" it by not trimming, but eventually it did seem to get fixed, not that I've checked on it recently. So Trim is rather fragile.

Maybe you can now post this as a bug with your findings—and refer to this thread? We want to be sure to catch their attention and a Question might not. PNG files are so often problematic for Adobe—I don't know why. Preview on Mac can handle PNG files PS refuses to open. I used to use the old Fireworks program for that. Adobe has improved, but if I'm going to have a problem with a file, it's almost always a PNG file.

Julie - You're right!

I went back and looked at my latest png files with a black background and re trimmed again and saved and black background was gone.

As Cristen said, maybe you can now post this as a bug?
