Photoshop: Scratch disk preferences ignored bug?

Hi,

I am using Photoshop CS5 Extended for Macintosh. (64bit)

I have a dedicated SSD drive and a RAIDed set of drives I am trying to use as my scratch disks.

In the preferences I have these drives checked and have unchecked all the other drives including system drive. (see attached image)

However when using photoshop it seems to ignore the fact that I have my system drive unchecked in the preferences and uses the drive as the primary scratch drive.

The drives that are checked do not get full. Yet photoshop seems to want to use the system drive first.

Is this a bug? I am using the latest patch 12.0.4

This becoming a major problem.

Many thanks.

Photoshop can't use anything other than the drives you specify.
And please don't forget that the OS will use the system disk for it's own pagefile, which grows with the size of memory used by each application.

Have you checked the sizes listed in Help -> System Info (that shows the scratch usage)?

And what lead you to believe that Photoshop was using another disk as scratch?

I'd been told (when I first started using OS X) to keep a third of the system disk free - I'm sure you know far more about Apple Personal Computers than I do, but the 12 Gb free in the image suggests that the system disk is at most 32Gb in size if you've been following this rule. HTH!

Hi guys.

Sorry I have this thread into two different places. Was not sure what the best place to post was.

Chris seems like you are covering both. Thanks.

If we use the other forum as the main one then when we find an answer I will post it here so anyone with a similar issue can see the conclusion.

Many thanks

Had a similar problem in PSCS4 on a G5 with an external USB drive when using the Liquify tool Thread now have the problem on a MacPro when using Lens Blur.

System: MP 1.1, 10GB, OSX 10.6.8
PSCS4.

PS prefs:

Preferences

Disk activity:
SystemUIServer

Error message:
UnmountAssistantAgent

Fun thing is, "LaCie4" was powered down, so no idea why the iStat disk activity window mixed up the names. It was "Backup" that was attached, and the drives light indicated activity.
Also, the lens blur (huge file, 12k pixels) took about 50% longer then usual. (guesstimation)

Liquify and some of the other plugins have their own scratch files -- beyond what Photoshop itself uses. Those plugin temp files can go onto other volumes.

Chris, is it logged as a bug, or is it as designed? (so that I can tag the thread accordingly)

Hallo Pierre!
Small world :)

Chris: If it's as designed, is there a way to prevent it from happening? I'd rather not have to eject or disconnect my external drives every time I want to use a specific filter...
