Photoshop: Starts with the layers panel always collapsed

Some time ago there was a problem with Photoshop launching with all palettes and toolbars collapsed. It has been fixed recently but there is still problem with the Layers palette. It is still starting as collapsed even if the workspace is set to locked in Photoshop 2020.

Howdy Dawid,

What OS are you on?  I'm not seeing a problem on either Win10 or 10.15.0.

Thanks,
David

Same problem here (on latest Win10). I already created a custom work profile, but didn't worked. Layers, Properties etc. are always collapsed at startup. I mean it's not a bottleneck, but just really annoying.

Howdy, Phillip, is it on a US version of Photoshop? what are the panels above Layers (if your issue is the same as Dawid, below)

Can you post a screenshot of your entire screen where the Layers panel is collapsed after launch?

I'm on Windows 10 Pro 1903.

Here's the screenshot (Warstwy is the Layers palette).

Funny thing - if I exit the Photoshop while the Curves (Ścieżki) or Channels (Kanały) palette is active, then everything is fine - they remain opened on next launch. Also reordering the palettes doesn't make any difference - the problem persists only with the Layers palette :(

Hello, Dawid, what are the two panels next to history?
Does it happen if Layers is placed above those three?

They are Adjustments and Operations.

I just had this problem with Photoshop CC 2010 V22.0.0.

The color and layers panels would always load collapsed or minimized.

If I selected Window->Workspace ->Reset (Profile Name) it would expand the panels but they'd be closed up the next time I launched PS.

The only workaround I could find was to undock the panels from the right hand side of the PS main Window and have them float in the top left. Then when I load PS the panels are not collapsed by default.

Hello, I've been having this problem too. Today I came up with a workaround by resetting the workspace every time you start. To do this first save your workspace with the Layers panel open, then open up Actions window, create a new Action, reset the workspace, open up Actions window again and stop the recording.

Then go to File > Scripts > Script Events Manager, tick the checkbox Enable Events to Run Scripts/Actions. On the bottom set Photoshop Event to Start Application, and set the Action to Reset Workspace (the one you just made), and hit Add.

Note that if you shift your workspace around you'll need to save the workspace again.

I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro. I have to open the layers panel and when I close PS the layers panel stays open.

This is interesting. Someone asks a question regarding how to solve a problem they are having. Two different Adobe admins ask for more information. This info is provided, then the admins proceed to completely ignore the thread from now on.

2 years later, others have still been having this issue, and it has been up to members of the public to suggest workarounds.

Like I said, this is an interesting example of Adobe’s approach to “help” :)

Hi,
The only thing that worked for me was to go in Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit. Hope that works for people who are still looking for an answer !
