Photoshop/Photoshop Elements: How to use Filters? (Preview is all one color)

Why are my photos black when using the sketch filter in Elements 10?
If i choose "photocopy" for example the photo is black - moving sliders has no effect. This is the same for most of the sketch filters.
Other filters seem ok. Tried uninstalling and re-installing.
Any ideas ???

The Sketch family of filters (with the exception of Water Paper) use a split tone effect. Basically they convert your image to two colors. The two colors that will be used are your current Foreground and Background colors.

I only see the behavior you describe when I have both my Foreground and Background colors set to black. Otherwise, this is working fine for me.

hi,
In PS preview of filter gallery the preview comes in by default 100% view and in pse it comes by default fit in view mode, It may happens that your image is too big in size and you just see one part of your imgae which may appear black.

thanks,

hi Matt,
As said by Brett N Sketch filter group filter's effect are dependent on foreground and background colours in the tools panel . as you have written your problem your stamp filter in not working it is due to your both colour(background and foreground) were be same and that colour was appearing on the preview.
or
you have tried to apply filter on wrong layer
