Why does my image get rotated and show a compass when using the trackpad on my MacBook or while using my Magic Trackpad?

Here's what I'm seeing:

Photoshop supports a two finger rotate gesture, as well as two finger pinch gesture for zooming, that users accidentally invoke while using the trackpad on their Macbook or Magic Trackpad.

There are few options to deal with this if you encounter it:

  1. You can press the [esc] to reset the document rotation.

  2. In Photoshop CS5, you can disable gestures altogether by disabling the "Enable Gestures" preference. Choose Preferences > Interface... and uncheck "Enable Gestures."

  3. In Photoshop CS4, you can disable gestures altogether by installing the Disable Canvas Rotation Via Trackpad plug-in.

For more detailed information on these options, see the following knowledge base document:

You rotate your view or zoom accidently when using button-less trackpads in Photoshop CS5 and CS4 (Mac OS)

Why is this happening?? Working in PhotoShop (CS5.5) on my Mac, I sometimes get a strange white and red icon on the screen. It looks alot like the compass/star symbol on a map. This usually happens when I am using two fingers on my track pad or Bamboo tablet to move around on the screen. The icon sometimes flashes on the screen or will stay depending on the magnification setting I'm using.

Is it something with the program or an issue with my computer?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled How do I get rid of the compass that appeared in Photoshop using a Mac?.

I was working on a project and this compass showed up in the center of my page. I don't want it there and I am not sure how to remove. I have tried clicking on enabling gestures under the Interface tab, but that did not work. Help? How do I remove it?

How can I turn off rotation only and leave all the other gestures?
